| | Daphna Creek is a gospel bluegrass band based in Broadway,
Virginia, USA. We are a local band, playing in churches, schools,
bluegrass festivals, and other settings. The band takes its name from the
Daphna Creek that flows near the Zion Mennonite Church in Broadway, VA.
The band sings a mix of original songs, gospel tunes, and familiar bluegrass
favorites. Since the formation of the band in August of 2001, Daphna Creek
has performed over 160 times.
- Steve Nyce plays mandolin for the band and sings
harmony vocals on several songs. Steve is a gifted and versatile
musician and he plays the string bass and guitar. He sells
pharmaceuticals for Merck and he lives with his family in Daphna,
Virginia.
- Dan Pickett plays string bass for the band and
sings lead and harmonies. Dan has been around bluegrass music for many
years and gives the band a strong connection to the traditional sound of
Virginia bluegrass music. Dan sells real estate and lives in
McGaheysville,
VA.
- Ben Risser sings lead and plays guitar for the
band. He has written over 15 original songs that Daphna Creek
performs. Ben also adds his harmonica breaks to the music as
needed. Ben pastors the Ridgeway Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg and
lives in Harrisonburg, VA.
- Joy Yoder sings lead and adds vocal harmonies to
the band. Joy is a sister to Ben Risser and is married to Elwood
Yoder. Joy keeps the group organized at performances and manages the
music. Joy operates her own sewing and alterations business from her
home in Harrisonburg, VA.
- Larry Yoder plays banjo for the band. He
lives in Broadway and operates his own poultry and beef farm. Larry
also drives school bus for the Broadway School system. Larry, Joy, and
Elwood are all members at the Zion Mennonite Church in Broadway, VA.
- Elwood Yoder plays guitar and sings lead and
harmony vocals. Elwood has written three songs that the group
performs, including a song about the Daphna train wreck of 1932. He
teaches social studies and Bible and chairs the Bible Department at Eastern Mennonite
High School, Harrisonburg, VA.
